This catalogue brings together a selection of paintings and drawings by Quinten De Coene, whose oeuvre mainly consists of portraits of friends and family from his artistic environement. Challenging the boundaries between figurative and abstract art, his depictions are the result of working and reworking the surface, be it with paint, charcoal or marker. De Coene's main concern is the tension of a portrait, to make something which is a thing on its own rather than the depiction of the sitter. The likeness of the subject is often erased through the process in order to delve into the psychology of the model. The results are stained, rubbed out figures who contain a certain degree of existentialism and isolation.
